The term 'smith' originates from the word 'smite', which means 'to hit'. The black color comes from fire scale, a layer of oxides that forms on the surface of the metal during heating. I had always incorrectly assumed that our talented shaper of metal was simply covered with ashes! Olivier, the smithy at Guédelon, remarked that the color is fused into his skin and doesn't scrub off with soap! Here he is sharpening his forged iron wares.

ChaChaneen! This unique project has captured my heart and imagination. It is such an adventure in learning! The friend connect feature should be up and working in the next couple of days. I switched from a blogspot address to a registered domain name hence the inability to connect via that nifty widget. I'll let you know when it's up and at 'em!
It is interesting to note that Hephaetus (Vulcan in Latin) was blacksmith to the gods in Greek and Roman mythology. A supremely skilled artisan whose forge was a volcano, he constructed most of the weapons of the gods, and was himself the god of fire and metalworking. Love the site!

And thus, the gourmet cheese Bleu d'Auvergne was born. This French gourmet blue cheese comes from the region of Auvergne and the cheese is made from milk of Salers and Aubrac cows. The rind is very thin and so the cheese is usually wrapped in foil. The cheese is rich and creamy with a pale yellow color and scattered holes and well-defined greenish-blue veining. We cut and wrap this cheese in wedge of 8 ounces and 1 pound.
